BEWARE UTILITY SCAMS

Here are the different types of utility scams that have been reported:

Door-to Door Solicitors

SEMCO customers, please beware of potentially deceptive marketing calls from companies that claim they can sell gas to SEMCO customers for less. SEMCO does offer a Gas Customer Choice program and customers are encouraged to visit https://gaschoice.apps.lara.state.mi.us/ for a comparison of all Alternative Gas Suppliers (AGS) active in SEMCO’s territory along with the actual cost of gas from SEMCO and participating AGS.

Customers are advised to be mindful about sharing personal information, including your natural gas account information until the terms of any Gas Customer Choice offering are understood.

Deceptive Marketing Tactics

SEMCO has received customer reports of being scammed by false Company contact information online.

Please be cautious of where you source Company phone numbers and website links before sharing your gas account number and banking information.

Scam Calls to Customers

SEMCO has also received reports of unsolicited phone calls requesting personal information. Please be aware these are fraudulent. We will never request sensitive customer information through unsolicited phone calls or text.

Here are a few helpful hints to avoid utility scams:

  • ONLY USE THE 800 NUMBER ON YOUR SEMCO BILL and do not blindly trust caller ID. Scammers post false information online and fake their caller ID number.
  • TO VERIFY A SUSPICIOUS CALL, hang up and call SEMCO directly at 800-624-2019.
  • REPORT A SUSPICIOUS CALL to SEMCO and the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) at 800-292-9555.
  • IF YOU FEEL THREATENED, reach out to local law enforcement by dialing 911.
