Energy Optimization Program
This year, customers of all utilities in Michigan, including SEMCO ENERGY customers, will begin paying a state-mandated surcharge on their monthly bills that will be used to support energy optimization projects in Michigan.
Public Act 295 was signed into law by the governor of Michigan on October 8, 2008. Among other things, this law is intended to promote energy optimization and the use of renewable fuels in the state.
As a provision of PA 295, Michigan utilities, including SEMCO ENERGY GAS COMPANY, were required to file plans with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) detailing how they will comply with the requirements of the Act.
In a plan filed in December 2008, SEMCO ENERGY indicated its plan
to use an Independent Energy Optimization Program Administrator
to be hired by the state. This Independent Administrator will coordinate
energy optimization programs for customers of all utilities who
choose this option.
As of July 1, SEMCO ENERGY will collect the Energy Optimization Charge on customer
bills and will remit those payments to the Independent Administrator,
who will develop and deliver energy optimization programs to customers.
This is a charge mandated by the State of Michigan. SEMCO ENERGY
does not profit from collection of these charges.
